Escúchame Compiles List of Over 250 Scholarships for Latino Students

May 22, 2011 in Community News by Escúchame

Two months ago, Raquel and I gave a presentation called “The Issue with Money,” where we presented our research on how Latinos handle money differently than other ethnic groups.  We talked about how our cultural perspectives and our upbringing affect how we handle money.  We also discussed the position of Latinos within the wage gap (we are at the bottom), and how an education can open the door for a higher salary.  Finally, we gave the attendees tips on how to better negotiate a starting salary and consequent raises.

At the end of our presentation, one mother approached me and asked a very simple question: “Where can our family find a listing of scholarships so our kids can afford a college education and get a better salary when they graduate?”  That question surprised me.  My first thought was to ask her, “Why don’t you go to the Internet and find a listing online?” But as I looked into her eyes, I realized that she needed assistance on where to look.  So I googled the subject myself, and what I found were dozens of different sites with one or two scholarships, but no central document with a large, compiled list. So Raquel and I hired a researcher to gather as many scholarships as he could find on the Internet, and we put all of them in one document.

Today, escuchame.org is making that document accessible to you in both English and Spanish. This document contains 257 scholarship programs for Latinos in the United States and includes the following information:

• Sponsoring Organization

• Additional Requirements or Geographical Limitations

• Name of the Program Administrator, Email Address, Mailing Address, Phone Number

• Application Deadlines

• URL or Website

You can find the document on the Resources page, located under the FAQs tab.  You must be a Community Member to access it. (Remember, membership is free and takes less than a minute: Click here to join Escúchame!)

We think this document is a good starting point.  Our goal is to be able to frequently update this list and make it available to you, our Community Members.

Of course, the information contained in this document is for general information purposes only. Students in search of scholarships to help pay for college may find some of the links here useful. Wherever possible, escuchame.org has provided scholarship details including the source document. This list is not all inclusive; there are still other scholarships that may not be listed here, and inclusion does not constitute endorsement. It is critical that students verify the information listed in the document, particularly where deadlines are concerned. All information should be verified independently before being used or relied on. For official and updated information including application forms and instructions, please always refer to the official document of the scholarship provider.  Always contact the scholarship provider directly with any questions. And please read the last page of the document before you reach out to any scholarship providers.

In addition, if you find or have a scholarship program that should be added to this listing, please send us an email at becas@escuchame.org and we will gladly add it to the Scholarship List. Similarly, if you find one of our listed scholarships is no longer available, please notify us.  Together we can build a great resource for Smart Latinas and Latinos.
